The Elk and the Moose are the same species; the last derived from Musu, which in the Algonkin language signifies that animal. The English used to call it the Black Moose, to distinguish it from the Stag, which they name the Grey Moose, the French call it L'Orignal.

Its [the wapiti's] name of "grey moose" is a hunter appelation, to distinguish it from the real moose, which the same hunters know as black moose.
